Lee Dong Wook and Lee Sung Kyung Escape Reality Through a Romantic Trip in The Nice Guy

In JTBC’s upcoming noir-tinged romance The Nice Guy, two vastly different individuals find solace in each other, embarking on a subtle yet emotionally charged “romantic trip” that serves as an escape from their bleak realities.

Plot That Pulls at the Heart

The story revolves around Park Seok-chul (Lee Dong Wook), the eldest grandson of a gangster family—a lineage he never truly chose. Beneath the hardened exterior lies a gentle soul who once aspired to write like Hemingway, now trapped by circumstances he never fully accepted .

Enter Kang Mi-young (Lee Sung Kyung), his first love and an aspiring singer haunted by crippling stage fright and the pressures of a difficult life . Their reunion opens a path toward vulnerability and healing—Seok-chul becomes Mi-young’s anchor, while she reignites hope in his heart .

A Gentle Escape from Harsh Reality

A pivotal moment is their outdoor date, where Mi-young overcomes her stage fright and sings confidently—Seok-chul looks on, fully present and supportive. Moments like these embody their “escape,” where love, not violence, holds sway .

Speaking about their bond, the production team describes them as each other’s comfort—individuals who share past wounds and find solace in one another’s presence .

Grounded Realism in a Noir Love Story

Both actors embraced the drama’s grounded narrative wholeheartedly. Lee Dong Wook, tired of fantasy roles, chose this project for its raw realism—eschewing glamor for authenticity . Meanwhile, Lee Sung Kyung poured herself into the role—performing, playing original piano compositions, and wholeheartedly embodying Mi-young’s emotional struggles .

Release & Anticipation

Set to premiere on July 18, 2025, The Nice Guy airs on JTBC every Friday at 8:50 PM KST. The 14-episode series is also available on Disney+ and Viki in selected regions, making it accessible to international audiences . It’s already being cheered for its refreshing blend of noir aesthetics, emotional depth, and a love story rooted in real human experiences .
