MCU Star Reveals Ambitious "Scrapped" Plans for Marvel Team That Deserved Better

 Date: August 24, 2025

In a surprising turn, Eternals star Kumail Nanjiani recently opened up about the unrealized future planned for his character — Kingo — in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Speaking candidly on the Working It Out podcast, Nanjiani shared that, following the release of Eternals, he had expected to have a long-running role within the MCU. “I signed on for six movies. I signed on for a video game,” he revealed, even mentioning that a theme park ride was part of the ambitious plan .

What Happened?

Nanjiani attributed the abrupt end of those plans to Eternals’ reception, both from critics and at the box office. The film currently holds a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and its domestic earnings were notably weak — factors that led Marvel to shelve the expansive roadmap planned for Kingo .

A Shattered Blueprint

Despite Kingo’s brief nods in subsequent MCU projects like Ms. Marvel, Loki, She-Hulk, and even a cameo appearance in the animated anthology What If…?, none recaptured the original momentum or potential envisioned for the character . Nanjiani expressed both pride in the project and a tinge of disappointment, acknowledging how deeply the fallout affected him — to the extent that he sought therapy .

What This Means for the Eternals

With no active sequel on the horizon, the fate of the Eternals remains uncertain in live-action form. Fans may have to settle for their animated appearances — such as potentially in the upcoming Marvel Zombies series — for any further engagement .

Final Thoughts

Kumail Nanjiani’s reflections shed fresh light on how even well-intended and extensive plans in the MCU can vanish almost overnight if a film fails to meet expectations. His candidness underscores the emotional complexity behind blockbuster franchises — where promise and disappointment are sometimes separated by the narrowest of margins.
