Hollywood, August 2025 — After years of uncertainty, the long-anticipated Gears of War live-action movie is finally gaining serious traction. Netflix, together with game developer The Coalition, has officially moved the project forward with director David Leitch at the center of development.
According to Windows Central, Leitch and his 87North Productions partner Kelly McCormick have confirmed that writing is already underway. Screenwriter Jon Spaihts, known for Dune and Doctor Strange, is tasked with adapting the beloved Xbox franchise for the big screen (windowscentral.com).
Leitch, best known for directing Bullet Train and co-directing the original John Wick, is in negotiations to direct the film. Polygon reports that Netflix sees him as the perfect fit to translate the game’s mix of brutal action and gritty storytelling into a cinematic experience (polygon.com).
While fans were initially worried the movie might be tied too closely to the upcoming 2026 game Gears of War: E-Day, McCormick clarified that the film will chart its own course but still feel connected to the franchise’s core themes (windowscentral.com).
Netflix is also expanding the franchise with an adult animated series, giving fans two new ways to experience the Gears universe. Both projects are exclusive to the platform, meaning viewers will need a Netflix subscription to watch once they are released (as.com).
Meanwhile, excitement continues to build in the gaming world: Gears of War: Reloaded launches tomorrow, August 26, 2025, with a remastered experience for Xbox, PC, and for the first time ever, PlayStation 5. The new mainline title, Gears of War: E-Day, will follow in 2026, coinciding with the franchise’s 20th anniversary.
With an acclaimed director, a proven screenwriter, and the full support of Netflix, this could finally be the moment when Gears of War breaks free from development hell and delivers the live-action spectacle fans have bee
n demanding.
