NBA referees will begin using communication headsets during games starting this Saturday, the league has confirmed. The new technology will allow officials to speak directly with the NBA replay centre and each other in real time, marking a major step toward improving decision-making accuracy and speeding up reviews.
According to the league statement released on Friday, the move is being rolled out in partnership with the National Basketball Referees Association as part of a two-stage plan designed to enhance officiating efficiency and overall game flow.
In the first phase, each referee will carry a clip-on earpiece, which they can insert during stoppages and replay reviews — but not while play is active. The league will study its effectiveness over the coming weeks.
If successful, a second phase will begin in January, which will allow referees to wear the earpieces throughout the entire game, including live play situations. This would represent a significant change in how officials communicate and manage key calls on the court.
The initiative comes as the NBA continues exploring technology-driven solutions to ensure quicker and more accurate officiating in a fast-paced modern game.
