The chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, has clarified that the $1.19m Birnin-Kebbi mini-stadium project was handled directly by FIFA and not the Nigeria Football Federation, as widely speculated.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Dikko addressed allegations linking the NFF to mismanagement of funds meant for grassroots football development and infrastructure.
According to him, the Birnin-Kebbi project, which has been at the centre of recent scrutiny, never passed through the control of the NFF, insisting that FIFA supervised and executed the initiative from start to finish.
> “That project was not handled by the NFF. FIFA took full responsibility for its execution through its approved contractors. The funds never came to the NFF,” he said.Dikko urged the public to verify information before drawing conclusions, adding that transparency remains key in managing football development funds in Nigeria.
The mini-stadium project was part of FIFA’s global development programme aimed at improving football infrastructure at the grassroots level.
